Globalization and the Emergence of Third Culture Kids in Indonesia

Pemahaman mengenai Third Culture Kids merupakan sebuah topik yang jarang dibahas dalam dunia hubungan internasional di Indonesia, dan penulis melihat ini sebagai waktu yang tepat untuk memperkenalkan kembali topik ini ke dalam diskusi hubungan internasional. Ide mengenai "Third Culture" dan "Third Culture Individuals" sudahh muncul sejak tahun 1950-an ketika idenya diintroduksi oleh seorang sosiolog dan anthropolog dari Amerika Serikat bernama Ruth Hill Useem. Sejak pencetusan ide ini, telah berlalu 60 tahun dan dunia kini sudah amat berbeda, globalisasi sudah menggenggam erat dunia dan membawa dengannya kemajuan pesat teknologi di seluruh dunia beserta proliferasi budaya. Hal ini menciptakan sebuah pergeseran dalam dinamika bagaimana kita berinteraksi dengan satu sama lain. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana ide mengenai "Third Culture" telah berkembang dan menelaah sekelompok individu yang berada pada garis depan perubahan itu.

The notion of Third Culture is one that is barely discussed within the realm of international relations community in Indonesia, and the author sees this as an opportune moment to reintroduce the topic into the IR discipline. The idea of a "third culture", and "Third Culture Individuals" has been around since the 1950's when the idea was introduced by an American sociologist and anthropologist Ruth Hill Useem. It has been more than 60 years since the inception of this notion and much has changed within the world, globalization has taken a full hold of the world with the aid of the advancement in communications technology and the proliferation of cultures bringing about a shift in the dynamics in how we interact with each other, it's not impossible to comprehend that perhaps the idea of "Third Culture" has expanded and evolved as well. We may well be on the cusp of the rise of new individuals with a more global-oriented point of view, distinct from those borne of traditional cultures.
