Entering the third millennium, there have been many controversial issues in the world. One of them is the issue of homosexuality. The world has witnessed changes in society, including the gay issues due to the development of mass media, particularly television at the beginning of 21st century. Thus, the phenomenon of homosexuality has become more complex since 2000s, especially in the USA. This phenomenon is essential because it is one of the world issues that has been argued by from time to time. Besides, this issue also concerns with human rights and mankind. This American Studies program research focuses on the representation of gay in American television series in 2000s. By applying grounded theory in collecting the data, this qualitative research incorporates the observation of seven phenomenal American gay-themed televisions series at the beginning of the 21st century as the primary data - Queer as Folk (2000) broadcast by Showtime Network; Some of My Best Friends (2001) by CBS and Six Feet Under (2001) broadcast by HBO. Some gay-themed series by American gay TV channel HERE such as Dante's Cove (2005), DL Chronicles, and The Lair (2007), with totally 391 episodes. The data analysis is conducted based on the semiotic approach system as a part of Hall's theory of representation to figure out several representations of gay appear in gay television series. The collected data are in the forms of dialogues and visualization from the television series. They are categorized as a set of symbols or sign (signifiers). Next, they are analyzed in order to acquire the meaning or concepts (signified). Besides, the data analysis is also completed by presenting the binary opposition and identifying the "pro" and "cons". Therefore, this interdisciplinary study has generated some research findings indicating that the depictions of marriage and family in gay television series are significantly useful to represent the equality for homosexual people as a minority group living in a hetero-normative society. Another one is Masculinity depiction in the television series is shown through behaviors, physical appearance, sexual pleasure and profession which can represent the struggle against the stereotype of homosexuality. The analysis also reveals that the observed gay-themed television series frequently picture friendship among homosexual people can be symbolized as binding essential values to strengthen their existence to struggle in hetero-normative mainstream culture. Data analysis of the television series also points out that homosexual people have faced different kinds of reactions when confronting heterosexual people in hetero-normative society. Consequently, for the sake of adaption, homosexual people put efforts which can be reflected through gay television series. This is seen as a way of negotiating the relationship between mainstream culture dominated by heterosexuals and gay culture which belongs to homosexual people in society. Additionally, these conditions are perceived as the external factors of the presence of gay themes in American television series. The research findings also reveal that when having interactions with the society, gay people have certain significant experience -"coming out"; being insulted as "faggot"; expressing themselves in "drag queen" performances; holding Gay Pride parade; and experimenting fashion which can be used for identity construction which can help increase gay visibility in public places or media (internal factors). Finally, declaring identity becomes important when minority groups are dominated and oppressed by the majority.
