Reliable information needed for the monitoring and conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran elephant is scarce. The primary goal of this dissertation is to reduce knowledge gaps in order to support elephant conservation in Bukit Tigapuluh and elsewhere in the region where elephants live under similar basic conditions. Using non-invasive DNA sampling, capture re-capture analysis, GPS telemetry, autocorrelated kernel density estimation, resource selection analysis, and population viability analysis, several key aspects including abundance, sex ratio, and age structure of the Bukit Tigapuluh elephant population, elephant home range size and habitat selection, and the potential impact of selected conservation measures and population scenarios on both population growth rate and extinction probability were addressed. With an estimated total population size of 143 individuals the Bukit Tigapuluh landscape supports the largest known elephant population in Central Sumatra, representing one of the most important areas for elephant conservation in Indonesia. Conservation of both the elephant population and their habitat in this region should thus be of high priority. The population roams mostly outside protected areas with adult home ranges ranging from 346 km 2 to 2043 km 2. While natural forest and gentle slopes (â¤ 8°) were significantly selected, agriculture areas and steeper terrain were used less frequently than expected based on availability by most animals included in the study. Given that sufficient suitable and safe habitat is provided, preventing illegal elephant killings appears to be of highest priority among the tested conservation measures and represents a mandatory pre-condition for activities addressing inbreeding depression such as elephant translocation or the establishment of a conservation corridor.

Kata Kunci : Elephas maximus sumatranus, non-invasive genotyping, auto correlated kernel density estimation (AKDE), habitat selection, population viability analysis (PVA).
