Pressure vessel separator is a type of separator used to separate water and vapor. Separator is widely used in geothermal powerplant field. This separator is loaded by fluids movement, entering the inlet nozzle then went out from the outlet nozzle. This kind of movement will be transformed as excitational force and the pressure vessel will be effected by this dynamic loading. This process must be reviewed to ensure the operational safety of pressure vessel, so the structural failure will not occur. To anticipate this load, the structural dynamic responses of separator need to be analyzed. This research is aimed to determine the value of natural frequencies and mode shapes of separator, dynamic responses of pressure vessel due to excitational fluid loading, as well as the location and the size of damping layer that need to be applied to the pressure vessel. This research is conducted using Abaqus as the finite element analysis simulation software with the variation of first 30 mode shapes. The result of this research showed that the value of natural frequencies are varied from 17.329 Hz in mode 1 to 152.29 Hz in mode 30. The dynamic loading at the inlet nozzle affected the pressure vessel at the damped condition with the maximum deflection of 3.84584 μm at outlet nozzle. Damping layer application covering all outer surface of separator with area of 65.5167 m2 resulting maximum deflection of 2.77915 μm or equivalent to 27.74% decrease of vibration level. This configuration has ratio between percentages of deflection reduction relative to damping surface area of 0.277. The ideal location to apply the damping layer is at outlet nozzle with the surface area of 9.9769 m2 or 15.23% of total area that can be covered with damping layer resulting maximum deflection of 3.37615 μm or equivalent to 12.12% decrease of vibration level. This configuration has ratio between percentages of deflection reduction relative to damping surface area of 0.796.
