SWEARING AND GENDER IN THE MOVIE WE'RE THE MILLERS

Sebaliknya kata makian dianggap biasa jika dituturkan oleh pria. Penelitian ini membahas hubungan antara fungsi dari penggunaan kata makian dan gender dari penuturnya dalam film We're the Millers. Data yan digunakan merupakan kata-kata makian dalam subtitle film tersebut. Dalam mengidentifikasi kata-kata makian, peneliti menggunakan teori-teori pengelompokan kata-kata makian oleh Rothweel, dan Anderson dan Trudgill. Setelah itu, data tersebut dianalis berdasarkan fungsi kata-kata makian dengan menggunakan teori-teori dari Pinker dan Burton. Hasil dari penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa pria menuturkan kata kata makian lebih banyak ketimbang wanita. 67.80% berbanding 32.20%. Dari persentase tersebut, Penggunaan kata-kata makian yang berlebihan oleh pria menurunkan nilai dasar dari kata-kata makian itu sendiri. Sebaliknya, penggunaan kata-kata makian oleh wanita tidak menurunkan nilai dasarnya sama sekali. Hal tersebut terlihat dari data makian penghinaan sebagai salah satu fungsi dasar dari kata-kata makian. Pada makian penghinaan, wanita menuturkan kata makian lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan pria, 66.67% berbanding 33.33%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang kuat antara jumlah tuturan kata-kata makian oleh pria dan wanita merujuk pada stereotip yang berkembang dalam masyarakat dalam film We're the Millers.
Stereotypes about swearing deal with the gender of its utterer. Swearword should not be uttered by woman. On the other hand, swearword is considered as casual word if it is uttered by man. This research discusses the relation between the function of swearword and the gender of its utterer in the movie We're the Millers. The data are swearwords in the movie subtitle. Identifying swearwords in the movie, the researcher refers to classification of swearwords theories by Rothwell, and Anderson and Trudgill. After that, the data are analysed according to the functions of swearwords by Pinker and Burton. The result of this research indicates that male characters utter more swearwords than female characters, 67.80% and 32.20% in frequency of swearwords respectively, by this percentage, the frequent use of swearword by male characters reduce the basic value of the swearword itself. Meanwhile, the use of swearword by female characters does not affect the basic value. Regarding the value of swearwords, abusive swearing meets the basic value of them. In fact, according to this research female characters utter more abusive swearword than male characters, 66.67% in contrast to 33.33% respectively. It concludes that there is a strong relation between the number of the uttered swearwords by male and female characters with the stereotype addressed to the utterer in society in the movie We're the Millers.
