Tesis ini merupakan upaya untuk mengupas redefinisi terhadap makna identitas feminin wanita Amerika keturunan Meksiko (Chicana) melalui novel karya Denise Chávez yang berjudul Face of an Angel (1994). Eksplorasi terhadap karya ini dilakukan karena karya ini memunculkan cakupan wilayah yang cukup luas tentang pengalaman hidup tiga generasi Chicana yang berkaitan dengan ketidaksetaraan jender dalam budaya patriarki masyarakat Chicano dan tradisi Katolik, dan adanya perubahan pandangan terhadap aspek identitas feminin Chicana. Untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang menyeluruh terhadap permasalahan yang dibahas, tesis ini menerapkan teori rekonsiliasi berbagai disiplin ilmu—pendekatan interdisipliner—yang mendekati permasalahan dari sudut pandang sejarah, sosiologi, sastra dan feminis; serta teori rekonsiliasi waktu atau masa yang ditetapkan oleh McDowell. Karya Denise Chávez digunakan sebagai bukti mental (mental evidence) untuk mendiskusikan identitas feminin Chicana yang dikonstruksi berdasar pada budaya patriarkal masyarakat Chicano dan tradisi Katolik, dan upaya untuk meredifinisi identitas feminin Chicana yang sudah ditetapkan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya kesadaran feminisme dalam diri Chicana yang dimanifestasikan ke dalam bentuk upaya untuk meredefinisi pengertian identitas feminin Chicana. Tetapi perubahan pandangan terhadap identitas feminin berlangsung perlahan karena permasalahan ini berhubungan dengan perubahan pola pikir seseorang.

This thesis is an attempt to reveal the redefinition of Chicana feminine identity which is issued through Denise Chávez’s novel entitled Face of an Angel (1994). This work provides a wide range experience of Chicana in relation to gender inequality. It presents the constructed Chicana feminine identity which is internalized by both genders, and the changing perspective of Chicanas toward their feminine identity which is represented through three generations of Chicana. In the effort to gain a total comprehension on the issue, this thesis applies the theory of reconciliation of disciplines—interdisiplinary approach—that studies the issue through the viewpoints of history, sociology, lite rature, and through feminist perspective. It also applies the theory of reconciliation of tenses constituted by McDowell. Denise Chávez’s novel is used as a mental evidence to discuss Chicana feminine identity as constructed with the basis of Chicano patriarchal culture and Catholic tradition, and the effort to rede fine the established Chicana feminine identity. The result of this study shows that Chicana feminist consciousness has been manifested in the form of efforts to redefine the established definition of Chicana feminine identity. However, the changing perspective toward feminine identity happens to be a long -term process of change. The complicated process of change occurs since it deals with an effort to renew one’s established mindset.
