Penyebaran genre gambus di antara negeri-negeri Melayu di kawasan selat Malaka merupakan gambaran hubungan maritim yang erat di antara Melayu dan Islam. Diduga demikian karena genre gambus hanya dapat ditemukan di antara negeri-negeri Melayu yang memiliki hubungan sejarah dengan Arab dan peradaban Islam Timur-Tengah. Penerimaan Islam oleh masyarakat Melayu sebagai satu-satunya sistem kepercayaan, serta menggunakan bahasa Melayu sebagai Lingua franca, memiliki latar belakang aristokrat yang sama atas peraturan kelas masyarakat, dan konsep alam Melayu sebagai pandangan dunia yang sama, memungkinkan genre gambus memiliki kemiripan di antara negeri negeri Melayu di Sumatra dan Semenanjung Malaya. Proses perkembangan kota Medan merupakan gambaran dinamika masyarakat menuju proses modernisasi. Perubahan seni rakyat seperti genre gambus ke seni kontemporer adalah suatu perubahan yang dialami oleh masyarakat itu sendiri, dari masyarakat tradisional menjadi masyarakat kota kosmopolitan yang multi-ras. Media populer yang mulai berkembang seperti teater bangsawan, film, dan radio serta televisi memiliki peranan penting disamping sebagai sumber hiburan bagi anggota masyarakat, juga berfungsi untuk menyebarkan unsur-unsur budaya

The dissemination of a musical genre so-called “the gambus” that reached out to the Malay countries around the Straits of Malacca reflects the close relationship between Islam and Malay people. It was supposed that the genre can only be found in Malay countries that formerly had a close contact with the Middle East. It was the perceiving of Islam as the sole system of belief in Malay societies and the use of the Malay language as the lingua franca, has the common aristocratic background of the ruling class, and the shared conceptual world of alam Melayu as a common world-view. That made the genre shared a possible similarities in style among Malays in Sumatra and the Malay Peninsular Rhe development process of the Medan city reflects the societal dynamism for modernization, Changed of the folk-art such as gambus to became a contemporary-art was a changed that was experienced by societies them-selves, from traditional society became cosmopolitan society (urban) which is multiracial.
