Lebih dari lima puluh satu tahun yang lalu, tragedi pembantaian massal terjadi di negeri ini. Mereka, anggota Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) maupun yang terduga berafiliasi dengannya ditangkap, dihilangkan, dibunuh tanpa pengadilan yang jelas. Pasca kejadian, keluarga korban mendapat diskriminasi yang berkepanjangan. Tumbangnya rezim Orde Baru kemudian membuat upaya-upaya rekonsiliasi mulai dilakukan. Upaya tersebut dilakukan dengan berbagai cara, salah satunya lewat film Senyap buatan Joshua Oppenheimer. Film sebagai media yang populer, merupakan salah satu medium yang jitu untuk mempengaruhi audiens. Film Senyap Senyap sendiri membawa pesan rekonsiliasi tragedi 1965, yang pada perjalanannya mendapat respons positif dunia internasional, namun banyak mendapat kecaman dari publik indonesia. Film ini dilarang diputar oleh beberapa beberapa organisasi masyarakat, Lembaga Sensor Indonesia pun tak luput melarang diputarnya film ini. Bahkan pemutaran di kampus, salah satunya di FISIPOL UGM yang mendapat antusiasme tinggi dari para mahasiswa juga tak luput dari aksi pembubaran paksa. Wacana rekonsiliasi tentu sangat penting, dan di penelitian ini para mahasiswa FISIPOL UGM dengan berbagai latar belakang yang berbeda memberikan tanggapan tentang film ini. Mereka, dengan berbagai pengalaman empiris yang beragam merespons secara kritis wacana rekonsiliasi yang diusung film Senyap. Keragaman latar belakang, pengetahuan diyakini mempengaruhi proses resepsi dari tiap informan yang terpilih di penelitian ini.

More than fifty-one years ago, massacre tragedy happened in Indonesia. All of the member of The Communist Party of Indonesia or those who were suspect affiliate with them, are being captured or killed without any legal judgement. After those tragedy, the families victim were being discriminate for a long time. At the end of Orde Baru regime, the exertion of reconciliation are being held. The effort to form reconciliation could be in many way, one of them is through Senyap, a movie by Joshua Oppenheimer. Film as a popular media are the exact medium to influence the audience. Senyap movie itself bring message of reconciliation of 1965 tragedy. Senyap got a very positive respond from the international world, but not in Indonesia, they got fulminate from some Indonesian audience. Indonesian Film Censorship Institute also banned this movie, even the screening in university, one of them are being held in faculty of social and politic UGM (FISIPOL UGM) that got a big enthusiastic from the student, unfortunately banned by a non-government organization. The reconciliation discourse are so important, and in this research, the student of FISIPOL UGM with various background give their respond about this movie. They, with their different empiric experience, critically respond the reconciliation discourse that brought by Senyap movie. The various background, knowledge, activity allegedly influence the reception process from every informant that chosen for this research
