Amerika Serikat adalah negara yang terkenal dengan keterbukaannya terhadap komunitas gay/homoseksual. Meskipun begitu, homofobia tetap menjadi ancaman besar bagi kaum gay di Amerika Serikat. Fenomena homophobia ini menarik para sineas Amerika untuk mengangkat isu homofobia di negara tersebut dalam film-film yang mereka produksi. Selain itu, para sineas ini memiliki tujuan untuk menumbuhkan kesadaran bahwa homofobia adalah fenomena yang sudah terinstitusionalisasi sehingga sulit untuk diberantas. Tertarik dengan fenomena tersebut, tesis ini bertujuan untuk meneliti secara detail representasi homophobia di Amerika Serikat yang tergambar dalam film-film Amerika Serikat bertema homoseksualitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan Postnationalist American Studies sebagai pendekatan untuk menelusuri isu-isu di Amerika Serikat. Tesis ini juga menggunakan teori Representasi dari Stuart Hall yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh analisis yang detail terkait representasi homofobia di film-film Amerika bertema homoseksualitas, khususnya yang diproduksi tahun 1990an-2010an. Tesis ini menggunakan sembilan judul film Amerika serikat bertema homoseksualitas yang diproduksi dari tahun 1990an-2010an sebagai data utama.Tujuannya adalah agar para pembaca memiliki pemahaman yang utuh akan representasi homofobia di Amerika Serikat dari tahun ke tahun. Terkait hasil penelitian, terdapat empat faktor utama yang memicu tindakan homofobia di Amerika Serikat, yaitu faktor agama, faktor peran gender, heteronormativitas, maskulinitas dan penyakit HIV/AIDS. Seluruh faktor tersebut menjadi faktor yang mendasar dalam penggambaran homofobia di film-film tersebut. Terakhir, dengan menekankan keempat faktor tersebut, para sineas memiliki dua tujuan dibalik pembuatan film-film tersebut. Tujuan pertama adalah film-film tersebut menjad bentuk kritik terhadap masyarakat yang masih tunduk terhadap ajaran agama yang mengekang, peran gender tradisional, maskulinitas dan heteronormativitas. Dengan tunduk kepada empat hal ini,homofobia menjadi hal yang masih sulit untuk diberantas di Amerika Serikat. Tujuan kedua adalah, film ini menjadi pesan bagi para kaum gay/homoseksual untuk terus berjuang untuk permasalahan mereka dan kesetaraan. The United States is well-known for its acceptance of homosexuality. Nevertheless, homophobia remains a threat that endangers the lives of gay people in the United States. The phenomenon of homophobia in the United States is intriguing for American filmmakers. Through movies which are concerned on homophobia, those filmmakers intend to raise the awareness that homophobia is an institutionalized practice which is challenging to eradicate. Intrigued by the aforementioned situation, the thesis aims to scrutinize the representations of homophobia in the United States as seen in gay-themed American movies. The thesis carries out Postnationalist America Studies as the approach of the study which encompasses the discussions of numerous phenomena in the United States. More importantly, the study applies theory of representation by Stuart Hall which helps scrutinize the representations of homophobia in gay-themed American movies of 1990s-2010s. The study uses nine gay-themed American movies of 1990s-2010s as the primary data of the research. Hence, readers are well-informed about the representations of homophobia in the country throughout the years. The findings of the study show three representations of homophobia in the United States, which encompass religions, gender roles, heteronormativity, masculinity, and HIV/AIDS as the highlighted factors that incite homophobia. At last, it is also found that by highlighting those major factors of homophobia, the filmmakers come up with two major intentions. The first intention is the movies as means to criticize the society who conforms to strict religious beliefs, traditional gender roles, masculinity, and heteronormativity. The conformity has led the society to commit to homophobia, hence making homophobia becomes elusive to eradicate. The second intention is the movies are aimed at encouraging gay communities to keep fighting for their issues and equality.
